FAQ on the Grand défi

What is the role of the person in charge of the Grand défi Pierre Lavoie?

It consists in motivating participants to do some physical activity throughout the month of May. The person in charge must also enter participants' results on the website of the Grand défi, in the section "school results".

What do the participants have to do?

They must be active both outside and at home to accumulate as many energy cubes as possible (1 energy cube = 15 minutes of physical activity).

A few examples of eligible activities: soccer, basketball, mini-basketball, jump rope, skateboarding, biking, swimming, diving, relay racing, hiking, ice skating, ball, gymnastics, Frisbee, badminton, flag football, hockey, track and field, tchouk-ball, golfing, judo, skiing, curling, horse-riding, roller-skating, etc. In short, any group or individual activity which requires some physical exercise.

A few examples of ineligible activities: Video games, card games, board games, pool, fishing, driving a four-wheeled vehicle, mini-golf, etc. In short, any activity in which you don't get enough exercise.

Who can accumulate energy cubes?

Participants, of course, but also their close family circle and teachers (teaching staff, grandparents, brothers and sisters, spouse) are invited to participate. However, for the energy cubes accumulated to be admissible, the activity must be performed in the company of the participant.

How are results compiled?

Compilation is notably performed through the participation logbook, which can be downloaded on our website. Participants must enter their sessions of physical activity in the logbook on their own and, if they are under 18, have it approved by a parent or guardian. An adult's signature is essential for the exercise session(s) of the participant to be admissible for the accumulation of energy cubes.

The person in charge of the project is free to use their own method for compiling energy cubes. The important thing is for some form of control to be exercised in good faith.

How must results be entered on the website?

  • The person responsible for the project must add up the energy cubes that participants have recorded over the week on their respective participation logbooks, and enter these results on the Get Up and Move website.
  • Ideally, this should be done every week on Monday morning, throughout the month of May.
  • If it is a large organization (e.g. secondary school), the task may be divided among classroom teachers and the person in charge of the project, as follows:
    • The classroom teacher adds up their students' energy cubes and communicates the results to the person responsible for the project at school level.
    • The person in charge of the project adds up the results of each group to obtain the overall result of the school, which they then enter on the website of the Grand défi Pierre Lavoie.

The more often results are compiled and entered, the easier it is for participants to monitor the progress of their organization on the website and to encourage one another to win first place. We believe this can be a great motivational tool for them and their families.

When can my organization begin accumulating energy cubes?

From May 2, 2011 at 8:00 a.m. up until May 30, 2011 at 5:00 p.m.

How is the average total of energy cubes per participant calculated?

The average number of energy cubes per participant makes it possible to compare the results of the participating organizations which regularly compile their results online, on a same basis, regardless of the number of participants of the organization.

Average number of cubes per participant:
Total number of cubes accumulated by your organization
Number of people taking part in the Grand défi at your organization

The total number of energy cubes accumulated by your organization refers to all the energy cubes collected by participants throughout the contest in May.

Is my organization eligible for the Grand Prize at the Olympic Stadium?

No, it isn't. For logistical reasons, this prize is currently reserved for students of the elementary schools in Quebec only. However, participants can have fun engaging in healthy virtual competition by measuring the progress of their group on the Get Up and Move website throughout the month of May.

How can we be sure that results are authentic?

We rely on the honesty of those in charge at each organization to communicate their results in a fair and impartial way. Should there be any doubt, the organizers of the Grand défi could ask for a verification in due form.
